The Classic Pick?
There was some discussion on the ski trip about adding a classic pick to the rotation as a second optional but highly recommended album. Here is the post to debate and set some ground rules on the matter.
Since all went with new music the first time around... why don't we all choose a classic/older album this time around? We could treat it as a revolving theme.
If I remember correctly (foggy), the main crux of the idea was to have the advantage of getting to select MORE albums (especially since we want to do 1-2 guest VV picks a year). I have no objection to picking old albums as your main selection (almost went with Warren Zevon's 1982 classic "Excitable Boy" for December), but I don't think anyone should be tied to an old album for their main pick if they don't wanna.
My 2 cents: we either 1) keep rotation and pick two albums a month, 1 main choice that everyone MUST consume...and then a classic album that people are ENCOURAGED to consume (and very well may have already consumed, and now go give another spin) OR 2) keep the current rotation for MAIN albums, but do the complete opposite rotation for recommended "classicish" albums.
It doesn't matter a lot to me, but I'd personally prefer the first option -- if only because if you felt like it on your month, you could get super-uber-nerdy, and even do a theme to our two picks (ex: LCD's "This Is Happening" as the MAIN pick and David Bowie's "Let's Dance" as the CLASSIC...........sexy right?! I know at least two of you loved that combo).
The premise was really to pick albums that people either already know, or should already know, and be familiar with (especially since most of the MAIN picks have typically been picks that most don't know -- although thats certainly not a rule). They don't HAVE to be old, like Led Zeppelin IV or fucking Sgt. Peppers -- they could just as well be White Stripes "White Blood Cells". For my personal guideline, I would ask myself, "Self - what's an album I love, that maybe 3ish out of 5 VVers are also familiar/very familiar with? See, this would allow me to comment endlessly on L. Reed's "Transformer", without wasting my month on it (which, I will definitely do if Wally doesn't beat me to it).
To me, the idea is an easy enhancement. Doesn't require anymore money, or much more time - due to the inherent familiarity of a majority of VVers. But the cool part is that lets say I've never obsessed over a particular album that YOU are personally obsessed with, and its a relatively popular album. Well, even though I don't have to, I may be persuaded, be a good VVer and go pick it up. Now you just made my life better.
The classic pick will almost inherently be better than the main pick. This could take a lot of the focus off of it. Good point? So What? Not Sure?
I'm not sure how I feel about the order. I like the idea of doing albums that play off each other, but I also like only having to wait a few months in between picks. Leaning towards the later.
What constitutes a classic? Not sure if there is a good rule of thumb. Maybe an album you personally regard in your top 20.
If there is one rule I think it should be that the picker has to have intimate knowledge of the album for an extended period of time. So I know Highway 61 Revisited is a total classic and I have no excuse for not owning it, but I shouldn't pick it because I'm not intimate enough with it to lead the discussion.
I propose the following order. Basicly we start the classic pick on the third spot (Kevin) This means that everyone will pick something every 3 months. What do you think?
Main ___ Classic
Brian ___ Kevin Scott ___ OB Kevin ___ Ben OB ___ Brian Ben ___ Scott

I was thinking alternate choices just like what we've started but in a different rotation so we're not choosing two albums at a time?

Thanks in advance - it WILL happen.
