I took the liberty to start this post for Ben. Mostly for selfish reasons trying to figure out how this all works. BTW -- she's the drummer!

How did you find these guys Ben?

I'm digging the setup Kevin. Outstanding survey as well.

Haven't heard any of the album yet, so I'll get back to you all on that.

Kevin - check to see if you can get 88.9 out of Burlington. Fantastic radio station.

Survey is all Wallce but check out the Roller Boogie trailer on the LCD post...hilarious!

I agree on 88.9. It has its moments...I guess all good radio stations go in spurts.

I'm not sure if this means anything to anyone but Kevin, but there is a pretty heavy Neutral Milk Hotel influence here

I think that was actually Ben's first choice...he threw me the curve ball with this choice, but it makes sense considering the parallels. The dudes voice reminds me of Jay Ferrar

FROM BEN

I am still waiting on my copy of the album to come in the mail so have not listened to it yet aside from the two songs I heard on the radio. I have not heard of the Rural Alberta Advantage (R.A.A.) aside from the radio in MN

I am surprised you said there are parallels to neutral milk hotel. That was originally going to be my pick but I figured that most of you had already been introduced to them.

One of the R.A.A. songs I originally heard on the radio had a rough methodical build up with harmonizing female vocals at the end which I originally thought sounded a bit like some arcade songs.

I am excited to listen to the album once it arrives.

I will try to post this tonight from home. If I cannot…… can you copy this to the blog on my behalf?

Here is a some short side reviews of new album I recently picked up.

The new Grinderman with nick cave. Had a hard time relating to most tracks on this album but he is a great on vocals. The album makes me think of jim morrison in a tin can getting kicked around by a gang of robots

Minus the bear
worth checking out. My verdict is still out. I am gonna give it another listen to be sure. I know I like the pairing of guitar, keyboards and drums but the actual vocals are the undecided.

I really am happy I recently found neutral milk hotel," aeroplane over the sea." I have never heard this band before. So you can imaging my Surprise when I found out they had been around in the 90s. Many believe this was the start of the indie movement. Hence the parallel Wallace identified.

@BEN - LOL "gang of robots"

Just a Blogger note. I changed the date of this post to 1/31. This will keep the monthly selection on the top of the blog all month and new posts on different topics will go just below it. Let me know if this makes sense.

makes sense...I did the same for Write about love

Just ran into a Pitchfork review of RAA. They mention Neutral Milk Hotel in the first line.

Genius idea about the blog post date - almost as genius as "gang of robots"

So The RAA --
# of Spins: 12+
Listening Medium: initially vinyl, then MP3 in car, and iPhone at work
Favorite track: Luciana
The beatcentric intro to "The Ballad of The RAA" got me very excited for the album. The Saddle Creek label also got me excited. Saddle Creek is the label started by Conor Oberst when he was 13, under a different name, funded by his older brother. That enthusiasm was tempered when the vocals came in on “Ballad…” (along with an apparent misuse of the word "invariably"). Love the triangle though...

As discussed on the ski trip -- this drummer is out of this fucking world. I made an analogy on the ski trip that I'll remake here since Wood is a fellow NBA nut. I think the RAA's drummer is Kevin Love. Leads the league in the oh-so-necessary-dirty work -- rebounding. Needs to get off the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is not a perfect analogy because The RAA are significantly better at music than the T-Wolves are at putting a basketball through a hoop and preventing the opposition from doing so.

LIKE:
-drummer
-gingly-gangly guitar parts in parts
-drummer
-rawness of songs like "The Dethbridge in Lethbridge" and "Luciana" that make me want to listen to Nirvana's "Muddy Banks...."
-drummer
-multiple attempts to expand a limited indie sound with shit like modern beats (think Radiohead Jr. in very limited doses)
-Occasionally great lyrics: “lovely limbs wrapped around me tonight” on “The Air” [also love the melody on that one]

DISLIKE:
-no extended drum solos
-vocals (including the female’s vocs, Ben - I know you liked the harmonizing - she just didn't do it for me....vocally that is)
-no songs with just drums
-overall, unimpressed with guitar parts
-with that drummer they need a rockin' bassist to have a killer rhythm section - this should be a no-brainer. It would be like if David Grohl and Josh Homme in My Crooked Vultures just got together and said, "my weak vocs and your killer drumming should be enough right? Do we really need to split a check with legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones?"

I will spin this record in the future. It’s good. And I LOOOOOVE the "selection". I love the selection because that is why I think VV is great -- Ben takes a flyer on a band that he knows doesn't suck and is intrigued by – and that’s all he knows. And now I can name drop The RAA to annoying dudes that try to "outmusic" me.

2.5 too low -- 3.0 too high. 2.75 Red Stripes!

A new song and video from RAA. Video is funny.

OB said...

I'm upgrading my Red Stripe rating to 3.0 after that video. Kinda made my day.
