February Pick - Iggy Pop - Lust for Life

This month's pick is Iggy Pop's second solo album Lust for Life.  This album along with his first solo album The Idiot was produced by none other than David Bowie himself. What fun! I haven't listened to this album yet, but I'm pretty excited about the Pop\Bowie collaboration. Enjoy!

This is a great album. It's extremely good to know that this was going on in 1977. I think disco and lame singer song-writer when I think 1977 music and this is neither. This is solid stuff, well influenced by Bowie and leaves his Stooges stuff in the dust. I'm shocked at how close Pop's voice is to Bowie's in a couple of the tunes. and the rhythm section is rock solid. Quality all around. Great pick! I'm looking forward to many more listens.

I hope everyone is enjoying this so far. I know some of you are still getting acquainted with it so I’m just going to chime in with a few cool notes to put the album in context, and get into the music later on.

- This is actually the third Pop\Bowie collaboration. He produced the final Stooges album Raw Power and Iggy’s first solo album The Idiot.

- Iggy was homeless living on the streets in Hollywood after the Stooges. He finally checked into a hospital and Bowie (station-to-station era) came to visit him. Bowie was able to get funding for a solo album with him collaborating on it.

- Bob Seger’s Hollywood Nights is about this period in Iggy Pop’s life. (OK, I made this up but wouldn’t that be great)

- David Bowie’s 80s hit China Girl first appeared on The Idiot

- Hunt and Tony Sales (drum and bass respectively) are brothers. I think the tightness of these two really comes across.

- Lust for Life was recorded in 8 days in Berlin
- A great quote from Pop on the collaboration "See, Bowie's a hell of a fast guy... I realized I had to be quicker than him, otherwise whose album was it gonna be?"

- Bowie toured with Iggy on the world tour for Lust for Life as a keyboard vocalist

- They did another album in ‘86, but after the Lust for Life tour Iggy pretty much severed ties with Bowie.

Good pick Wally.
This really isn't Iggy Pop's fault but I went through a stage back in 2005ish where I listened to Jim Rome for 3 hours a day and "Lust for Life" was his intro and outro themes, so it's impossible for me to subjectively listen to that song.

'Some Weird Sin' and 'Passenger' are probably my favorite tracks - honestly if you would have told me that they were Bowie songs I'd believe you.

'Turn Blue' - just creepy. Also very cool.

Thats funny about Jim Rome. I really hate that guy so I can see how that would be an obstacle. I thought going in that I wouldn't be that interested in the title song because I've heard it so much, but I really heard it with fresh ears in the context of the album. I may be mistaken but I think the intro is more stretched out than what you hear on the radio, and also I never really listened to the lyrics. They are so perverse it's great.

I knew something would come up about "Lust." On this one...I wasn't a big fan until I listened to the ALBUM. I think it's a great song and there is a reason it's been sold so many times...

'Passenger' is probably the best song on the album, but from an overall outlook, I can't get over the rhythm section. This was the best surprise to an excellent album. I will continue listening to this.
